INSIGHT INTO FUEL AND TOLL COSTS

Diesel surcharge and mileage charge explained

Check the current diesel surcharge and find out what the new mileage charge, effective from 1 July 2026, means for LCL and FCL shipments within the Netherlands.

What is the diesel surcharge for this month?

The diesel surcharge is a variable surcharge applied by transport companies to cover fluctuations in fuel prices. This surcharge is adjusted periodically and has a direct impact on your transport costs.

For the month of June, the diesel surcharge is 30%. This percentage is calculated based on current diesel prices and agreed indexation methods.

By communicating transparently about the diesel surcharge, TOP provides clarity, predictability and fair rates within your logistics chain. This way, you know in advance what to expect, both for transport within the Netherlands and for international shipments where road transport is part of the total logistics solution.

Why is a diesel surcharge applied?

The diesel surcharge for road transport is based on current fuel prices. Transport companies use a fixed base diesel price, with any increases above that level converted into a surcharge percentage.

This percentage is adjusted periodically based on a diesel index and directly reflects market developments. The surcharge is passed on by transport companies and charged by TOP on a one-to-one basis, without any additional mark-up.

New kilometre-based road charge as of 1 July 2026

As of 1 July 2026, the Netherlands will introduce a kilometre-based road charge for trucks. This charge applies to freight traffic on Dutch roads and creates an additional cost component within road transport.

For TOP, this means that the costs we receive from our hauliers will be passed on for transport within the Netherlands. We do this in a transparent way, so it is clear in advance which surcharge applies.

What does this mean for LCL shipments?

For LCL deliveries, where goods are transported by trailer within the Netherlands, the kilometre-based road charge will be passed on as a percentage of the freight rate.

For LCL deliveries, the following applies as of 1 July 2026: + 8% on the freight rate.

This surcharge applies to trailer transport within the Netherlands.

What does this mean for FCL shipments?

For FCL deliveries, where a full container is transported by truck, the kilometre-based road charge will be calculated based on the number of kilometres driven.

For FCL deliveries, the following applies as of 1 July 2026: € 0.22 per kilometre.

This calculation applies from the moment the container is collected at the Maasvlakte terminal until the empty container has been returned to the depot.

Transparent and passed on one-to-one

TOP does not apply the diesel surcharge or kilometre-based road charge as an additional margin. These costs are passed on as they arise within the transport chain. This keeps the cost structure clear, verifiable and fair.
