Heavy cargo such as metal, tiles or machinery often maxes out a 20ft container on weight while space remains — a 40ft then adds nothing. The second misconception: "the external size is the internal size." A 20ft container is over 6 metres on the outside, but internally around 6.06 by 2.35 metres remain — and the door opening is slightly smaller than the internal size. Whoever bases the load plan on external dimensions, or allows no margin for the forklift, gets stuck at loading. Always calculate with internal dimensions and the door opening.
The third misconception: "every container type is available everywhere at once." Standard 20ft and 40ft containers are plentiful, but special types such as reefers, open tops, flat racks and 45ft High Cubes are scarcer and not directly available on every route or terminal. With special cargo, it pays to fix the container type early — otherwise availability dictates the planning instead of the other way around.
Practical example
A Rotterdam trading company wants to ship 22 euro pallets of consumer goods to a customer and requests two 20ft containers.
