Strike at ports India averted
Three years of negotiations
The strike at ports in India that was due to begin on Tuesday will not go ahead. With the deadline looming, an agreement has been reached to introduce new collective bargaining agreements for the port workers in question.
The unions had already dragged out of the fire in September agreements in principle on higher salaries for dock workers at government-run ports like Chennai and part of Jawaharlal Nehru. This after three years of negotiations, after the validity of the old collective agreement expired in 2021.
As nothing changed in practice after the September deal, the unions had announced that strikes would start from 17 December at government-controlled port terminals.
India's ministry in charge of maritime affairs has now instructed the port operator Indian Ports Association to accommodate the unions and dockers, putting an end to the threatened strike.
