Deutsche Bahn predicts further decline in EU rail transport
-2,5% in 2024
European rail freight transport seems to be at a standstill and is suffering from declining demand in the transport market. This is evident from the latest forecast (July) by railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB).
The new expectation for this year is that the volume will decrease by about 2.5%. DB analysts were much more optimistic earlier this spring. In March, they anticipated a cargo volume that would barely decline, with a small loss of only 0.1%.
Revised downward
The growing pessimism is not good news for European rail freight carriers, who already saw a nearly 7% decline in cargo volume last year. Additionally, DB has also revised its growth expectations for European road transport downward. In March, the forecast was still a comfortable revenue growth of 4.5%. This has now been halved to 2.2% for the remainder of the current fiscal year.
