Autologistics are increasingly taking the train
Rail freight transport
Good news for rail freight operators. The transport of new cars by rail in Europe is on the rise again. Last year, no less than 13% more cars were transported by train. A total of 15.4 million vehicles were involved, compared to 13.6 million in 2022.
This is evident from a study by consultant Infront. The analyst attributes the rising figures to higher car production in Europe and rising imports from countries such as China. For example, the import of new vehicles increased by almost 25% last year to 3.3 million vehicles. This mainly concerns the import of e-cars from the People's Republic.
More balance
The study also shows that Europe will export more cars than it imports in 2023. For example, last year 4.7 million vehicles were delivered to EU seaports for overseas export. The growth of imports also means that there is more balance in the outgoing and incoming transport flows of car carriers and rail transporters.
Infront expects that vehicle exports from Europe will shrink this year given the problems with German car production. At the same time, imports are increasing.
