Airfreight rates more expensive
Spotrates 20% up
After several volatile weeks, the global air cargo market appears to be gearing up for a price surge ahead of the busy winter season. This indication comes from the latest market figures for the month of September, as reported by the Dutch air freight analyst WorldACD Market Data, based on approximately 450,000 weekly transactions.
Additionally, air freight prices per kilo for the last week of September (September 23-29) stood at $2.81, approximately 10% higher than the same period a year ago. When looking solely at spot prices (the day market), the price increase was even more pronounced at 20%, according to WorldACD. For the entire month of September, there was also a solid increase (+9%) in the average global air freight rates compared to the same month in 2023.
Volumes
Flown volumes also accelerated significantly in the last week of September. Tonnages towards Europe from China (+9%), South Korea (+26%), and Taiwan (+16%) saw substantial increases. Tonnages from Hong Kong to the EU showed a consistent rise of nearly 20% over the past five weeks compared to the same period a year ago, according to the Dutch air freight analyst.
The busy winter season in air freight, which typically starts in October, appears to have already begun.
